Broadband Internet Access
The County has been working diligently with the Clay County Broadband Committee to encourage greater and more rapid deployment of broadband in all regions of the County. This resulted in the recent submission of an application for funding support under the Department of Information Technology’s Growing Rural Economies through Access to Technology (GREAT) Program to expand broadband in Shooting Creek, Tusquittee, Warne and Brasstown (see http://www.ncbroadband.gov ) Frontier Communications was successful in their application and will be expanding their reach in the Shooting Creek area in the coming months.
The County is also partnering with Tri-County Community College to offer a short course on boosting broadband speeds and using the improved speed to benefit business marketing tools through social media. This course will take place on the 26th of September from 4:00 to 6:00 at the County's training room in the lower level of the Health Department.
The County is also working with the State to address issues relating to current providers that may be under-delivering and preventing areas from accessing funding to support further broadband penetration. We will continue to seek support from funding sources earmarked for geographically marginalized regions or distressed counties where these programs are prevented from going due to earlier federal funding grants. For current information on federal programs, such as the Connecting America Program (CAP), go to http://www.fcc.gov/general/national-broadband-plan.
